Thursday September 9 [this month: date changed from normally First Thursday; location changed from normally 20 Hampton Av #100, Northampton] NORTHAMPTON LIVING WAGE COALITION 6-7:30pm, Northampton Brewery, 11 Brewster Ct, Northampton. The Northampton Living Wage Coalition was founded out of concern for those working in our community who cannot afford to live here and meet their basic needs (for a decent home, healthy food, appropriate clothing, and health care when needed.) On Nov. 19, 2009, the Northampton City Council voted for a living wage resolution updating its 1998 Living Wage resolution. Using data from the Crittenton Women's Union and the Northampton Housing Authority to calculate a basic needs budget for a single person without children, the 2010 Northampton living wage is at least $11.90 per hour. The NLWC will adjust it annually, publicize it, and honor those employers who pay a Living Wage or make a genuine attempt to do so. ON THE AGENDA: In addition to reviewing our progress in the certification process, the website, and the living wage logo, we will also be discussing the recession and its impact. Documentary and discussion about the 2008 Republic workers' sit-in. Days before the winter holidays of 2008, the Republic Windows and Doors factory in Chicago announced to its workers that they would be closing its doors and leaving 260 people jobless. The factory's lender, Bank of America, decided to cut off finances, forcing the company's close. Meanwhile, the factory's CEO, Richard Gillman, was plotting to relocate the factory from under the workers' feet to a cheaper location in Iowa. When the workers caught wind of the corrupt actions taking place from the forces of power above them, they organized and eventually held a full-on factory occupation and sit-in. They demanded payment for hours worked, demanded the financial responsibilities of Bank of America, and demanded that the CEO be held accountable for his actions. With time, strong organization, and firm demands the workers had won. Info: Gary Lapon, glapon@gmail.com.
